Abstract: During overhaul of steam turbine No.2 of a power plant, it was found that there is an about 35mm surface crack in sixth stage diaphragm of the lowpressure cylinder, which influences on unit safe operation directly. According to comprehensive analysis of the material of the diaphragm, it was decided to repair the defect by dig grinding and patch weld, and to adopt the cold welding method for the patch weld. The patch weld process, the preparing work, the preventive measures and the inspect method were introduced. The repaired diaphragm had operated for an overhaul period, and there was not new defect occurred in the patch welded position. This shows that the patch weld technology can ensure safe operation of the repaired diaphragm completely.
